The afternoon sun beamed down as the soldiers started to walk in union lines. Sergant Kilrain died this morning after being shot twice yesterday at the battlefield. Meade’s headquarters was the first to be knocked down as cannons whizzed through the air. Cannons fired left to right as the air filled with Smokey gunpowder, and surroundings caught fire. Hancock then rode up on his horse as he told his soldiers, “There are times when a Corp. Commander’s life does not count.” Soldiers lay under trees waiting for the order to attack. The men walked slowly in lines as the drums played. More cannons fired as the soldiers fixed their bayonets. Artillery men raised their hats as the infantry passed through. Soldiers from the North fired cannons as the men marched toward the fence. Soldiers fell to the ground as dirt and bullets flew through the air. Suddenly Hancock was shot;”I will not be moved until this engagement is decided.” Those were the words spoken after he fell off his horse onto the field. Our soldiers double quick stepped closer to the fence.The smell of feces’ and blown off limbs filled the air. Bodies lay all over the field, some helpless and cold, while other were already dead. Armistead started to slip away when he said his last words, ”Send him my regrets and tell him I’m sorry.” Seconds after, he died. All but few soldiers lived as the war ended today.
